At a time when masked agents of the state act with impunity, emboldened neo-Nazi groups march in the streets, and one institution after another legitimizes authoritarian consolidation, there’s a need for unflinching reporting to hold these forces to account.
That’s why we started Decoherence Media. We are an independent, journalist-founded nonprofit investigating authoritarian and anti-democratic movements using open-source and data-driven methods.
As reporters and researchers, we have years of experience exposing far-right and neo-Nazi networks, first anonymously and then for outlets including Bellingcat, The Texas Observer, The New Arab, and Left Coast Right Watch.
We have watched in recent years as news organizations covering the threats posed by the far-right have closed, downsized, or shifted coverage elsewhere.
We’ll publish deeply researched investigations on movements and trends that threaten communities at home and abroad. We will also share searchable data interfaces, analyses, and educational guides that help and encourage others to expand on our work. Our interfaces will include things like scrapes of Nazi web forums, exposed webservers, and Telegram archives that allow journalists and researchers to better understand how authoritarian movements and their associated networks evolve and communicate.
We’re motivated by the open-source ethos (both open-source investigation and open-source software) and will always strive to share our methods, as well as the source code for any tools, interfaces, investigations, or visualizations we make (follow us on GitHub!).
We will also incorporate traditional reporting in our investigations. If you have a confidential tip, a noteworthy dataset, or any other information you think we’d be interested in, contact us.
Decoherence Media will identify and expose fascists, whether they’re wearing khakis, a suit, or a badge.
What is decoherence?
Quantum decoherence is a physics phenomenon in which a physical system loses information as it interacts with a larger environment. Through this interaction, physical states that were once close together, interfering, evolve in time to be far apart, isolated.
Too many people, through interactions with their information, media, and political environments, become isolated and atomized. And it’s in this atomization that authoritarian movements fester.
